Last Wednesday evening, curators from around New York and friends of Cultured made their way to 52 Walker for the Independent Curators International’s (ICI) annual raffle night where the stakes are low but the spirits are high. The prices this year, which included prints by Angel Otero, Sarah Sze and Nora Turato alongside year-long subscriptions to Cultured and Topo Chico, put fate in the hands of glammed up shoe boxes from which the raffle officiant, artist Jacques Louis Vidal, selected lucky winners in a cape and mask.
He was the second act of the evening which started with 52 Walker’s Ebony Haynes and MoMA’s Ana Janeveski speaking on the current Turato exhibition everyone was partying within and their experiences working with the artist and her precision as a performer. The talk highlighted the ways curators help unpack practices and aid artists in finding resources and platforms that suit their work’s needs. All the money raised on Wednesday will go towards ensuring the next generation will be through the ICI’s supportive network, programs and fellowships; it will ensure there will be more parties with friends and more exhibitions to hold them in.
