In celebration of François Nars’ first published collection of personal photographs, Faery Lands, a special exhibition of the work will be on view at the Liaigre showroom in the Miami Design District beginning on December 2. Here, we speak with the photographer about the new work and preview some of the pieces in the show.
What drew you to photography in the first place? My love for photography began when I was a kid. I loved looking through fashion magazines and my parents’ photography books.
Why did you choose Tahiti as the focus of this series? I have an island in Tahiti and have spent the last 15 years living there part-time. As soon as I first visited, I fell in love with the people, the landscapes and the natural beauty of those islands.
How would you describe your creative process? My creative process is all about capturing a moment, capturing the right light, and capturing the soul of a person. It’s about trying to find the best angle and make the picture memorable.
Which photographers influenced you and in what ways? Edward Weston, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon and so many others. They helped me build my aesthetic.
